‘King’s Lead Hat’ by Rob Jones

A post Christmas and penultimate Star Wars treat up at Mondotees today. King’s Lead Hat by Rob Jones goes up at a random time today priced $50. Measuring 24″ by 36″ signed and numbered edition of 255.

Here’s the word from Rob…

There’s a scene in Star Wars where Grand Moff Tarkin strides into his council room on the Death Star announcing the dissolution of the Imperial Senate. His officers express concern over the Emperor’s ability to maintain control of star systems without this governing body. To this Tarkin retorts, ‘Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station.’

This exchange made me consider the motivation behind the Emperor’s construction of Darth Vader. I’m not referring to just the cybernetic bits maintaining Vader’s body but also the active manipulation of his mind to bring him to the dark side. The Emperor created in Vader a weapon no different from the Death Star in its ultimate purpose, a means of generating fear amongst the vast populace he ruled. An administrative tool that became the executor of the Emperor’s cruel commands. With that in mind, I decided to depict Vader as a facility harnessing and directing his immense natural power towards malicious ends.

A word from Mr Danger

i grew up on Ewoks, not Star Wars. thats a very odd statement to say, but until i was maybe eleven, i had no idea Ewoks were even related to Star Wars, the connection was just never made. chalk that up to the fact that the majority of my tv entertainment consisted of things taped off television on VHS. so i didnt have Empire, i had Battle For Endor because NBC aired it, mcdonalds commercials and all (’the hot stays hot and the cool stays cool‘). my brother was the true enthusiast, his stock primary stuffed animals as a kid was Wicket and Paploo (he still has them at age 30), and they were worn into oblivion. for the sake of trivia, i named my primary stuffed bear a descriptive phrase: “brown softy”, but it was not space related. but needless to say, there were alot of cardboard spaceships and tree forts at our house. little did seven year old me know there were alot of other plots we could have pretended our way through. no regrets. either way, when asked to do this print for Mondo/LucasArts, my decision was already made.
