The Interviews : Tyler Stout

At some point back in 2006 I had grown tired of my Movie Poster collection. I couldn’t afford the Vintage Era pieces I wanted, and of the new releases, I maybe bought one in a hundred.

It seemed the Hollywood marketing machine was content to put out any old Photoshopped crap to promote their movie.

Imagine my joy then when I first stumbled upon Tyler Stout. Living in sunny England I had been pretty much oblivious to the The Alamo Drafthouse and its merchandising arm Mondotees. They had just asked Tyler to create a screen-print for their Netflix Rolling Roadshow screening of The Warriors, and my love of collecting movie prints was about to get an injection, in fact its what started the idea for this blog.

Tyler is one of, if not the most popular artists creating movie themed art today. His ensemble pieces sell out almost instantly and can then fetch well into 4 figures on the 2nd hand market, he also does a fine line in gig posters too!

Certainly one of the most talented artists featured on this blog, and a humble guy to boot, Ladies and Nerds, Mr Tyler Stout….

Tell us a bit about yourself, how old are you, where are you from, where are you based, how long have you been illustrating and what is your preferred medium? Etc…

I’m 34 years old now. Born and raised in brush prairie, washington, bp represent. i’m based out of my house, which is next to my parents house, which i grew up in. i also live next to my sister and my aunt and cousins. its a regular compound. bring your bible. Screenprinted posters is my preferred medium, its what i mostly ouput. I’m big into pens and pencils too.

How and when did you first become interested in art/illustration ?

I think we’re all into drawing from the very beginning, i just never grew out of it. never decided to branch out to things like sports, hiking. driving. etc.

Can you remember your first/earliest piece of work? Did it end up on the fridge?

i don’t remember my first piece, no. my first screenprint was in college, i’m sure they’re still on my website portfolio, towards the back. but no, nothing on the fridge, my parents weren’t into that.

What were your early influences ?

I was a big pop art fan, andy warhol, roy lichtenstein, jasper johns.
was a big picasso fan. still am.

Did you attend art school or are you self taught ?

I am a graphic designer by trade. took the classes. got a degree in new media. which was 10 years ago. so probably old media now.

Do you think artistic talent is something you are born with or can it be taught ?

I think anyone can do it. with varying degrees of success. but practice makes a difference.

As an artist are you always learning and developing your skill, technique, style etc?

Experience definitely helps with any skill, so i’d like to say i’m getting better. but who knows?

What was your first illustration job and how did it go ?

Whew, i can’t remember that. probably something for my parents or something. yearbook in high school.

What would you do if you couldn’t illustrate ? Have you held any other jobs ?

I have no idea. i’d do something else. chop wood. i have held other jobs. worked at a plastic factory, make plastic things. worked at a video store. 2 of them actually. worked at a design company in vermont. and one in portland.

Talk us through your creative process ?

I have no idea how to do that. start with an idea. execute that idea.
be disappointed. repeat.

Where do you draw your influences from ?

The world around me. specifically the things that i like. not so much the things i don’t like.

Of your own work, do you have a favourite piece ?

No.

Have you ever butchered a piece of work and had to start again ? If so what went wrong ?

I’m sure i have. as to what went wrong, sometimes we just start down the wrong path and don’t realize it until far too late.

Which other artists do you admire, and do you collect others work ?

I used to collect a lot more than i do now. but i am a big frank kozik fan, jay ryan fan, rob jones fan, patent pending fan.

What are you currently working on ? Do you have any new projects you are looking forward to ?

Its probably a secret. and the things i’m looking forward to are probably secrets as well. but i will ask you this: do you like dinosaurs? lazers? time travel? do you use craigslist?

Do you read praise/criticism of your work and if so how does it make you feel ?

I don’t. or i try not to. or i do and it makes me feel terrible.

How does it feel when you finish a piece of work? What are your immediate thoughts and do they change towards the piece over time?

I don’t usually hate any piece that i just finish. that’s how i know its finished. me not hating it. the hate usually grows over time. a slow build.

Is a piece of work ever finished ?

When it goes to print, its done.

Can you describe your typical work day ?

Wake up, stare at blank page of paper, go to sleep. repeat.

How do you unwind, hobbies, travel etc ?

I watch tv. summers comes. disappears.

What are your favourite movies ?

The ones that involve movies. i like all kinds. i watched death race again last night. the remake. i have no taste. although i completely despise the transformers trilogy. worst trilogy ever.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Wearing shorts to work every day.

What’s the worst thing about your job?

Deadlines.

Do you think the current trend in movie art is a fad or will it stand the test of time ?

I’d have to see the timeline. are we talking 100 years? or 100,000 years?

Thank you very much for your time and keep up the good work. Is there anything else you would like to add ?
