2010 Print Of The Year Awards
A huge thanks to all the readers of Poster shizzle who voted in their hundreds for the first Print Of The Year Awards
I’m very pleased to announce that the winner is……….
Mr Tim Doyle for ‘I Am One’ his Quadrophenia inspired print.
Tim was understandably ecstatic at the news and after he’d wiped away the tears of joy he was kind enough to take part in this interview for us.
Congratulations Tim, the readers of postershizzle have voted ‘I Am One’ their print of the year for 2010. How does it feel to have won such a prestigious award ?
Oh, it’s very nice, definitely. I’ll put it right next to my bowling trophy from 3rd grade. Wait- there is an actual reward, right?
”I Am One’ was a commissioned work from Insidetherockposterframe. How do you approach a piece like this and were you a fan of the film to begin with ?
This one was interesting as I had drawn a never released Quadrophenia poster for an Alamo Drafthouse screening that ended up being canceled for some reason or another, back when I ran Mondotees. I had been meaning to redo it and release it as an art print for a while, and when Gary at ITRPF contacted me about this one, I already had most of the reference material together. Gary had a very specific vision of what he wanted drawn: Jimmy on his bike from behind, outside of the Marquee club, in the rain, with the clock in there, but that was pretty much all the direction I got. Working with someone who already has a clear vision of what they want is a nice change from the ‘just do something good’ that I usually get from clients. Oh, and Gary had me put his cats in there. They’re by the clock. I put my cats in all the ‘Sea Also Rises’ prints, so I completely understand the impulse.
Can you describe your process from start to finish, is it the same for every print, or does it vary wildly ?
Varies wildly. When it’s an assignment, I watch the film, grab references, and bang my head against it for a while. But as always, my best ideas come while I’m in the shower. I do all this brainstorming, and it’s when I’m not thinking about it is when it comes to me. For my own stuff, it’s whatever dumb things are kicking around in my brain that won’t leave me alone until I draw them.
Which movie inspired work of yours did you most enjoy over the last year and is it easier or harder to work on than other prints you produce ?
I did something like 25 prints in 2010, which is crazy when I think about it. My favorite movie related one from last year is probably the Blade Runner I did for the Astor/ TommyGood.com. I lucked out as it was an idea I had to do for a while as part of my regular series I’m doing w/ imagery from that film- It just dovetailed nicely. Movie prints can be easier to do, as I’m already working with an established set of iconography, settings, and characters. Doing my own art prints can be more difficult as I have to create everything from the ground up. But honestly, they’re both fun…it’s not like I’m laying bricks here.
What movie inspired work can we look forward to from you and Nakatomi in 2011 ?
OH! I can’t tell you specifically on my stuff yet. But I can say that I do have two exciting movie related prints already completed, one for TommyGood, and another for Dark City Gallery. They should be out within the next month or so.. From Nakatomi, we have the usual gang of artists- Anville has another movie car print in the works, and Jacob Borshard always has something cooking. I just got an email from Jon Smith with a great idea he had- hopefully we’ll get that out soon. I’ve got a couple of other gallery shows coming up this year as well- SpokeArt gallery did that great Wes Anderson show, and he’s got more in the pipeline that I’m going to be in. And I’ve got a couple of comic book projects coming up. OH- and Nakatomi will be getting back into t-shirts- we haven’t had a new shirt release in a while, and I really need new clothes!
Any other artists or websites you’d like to pimp ?
The above mentioned sites, TommyGood.com, Dark City Gallery, Inside the Rock Poster Frame. Also PosterCabaret.com has been a joy to deal with over the years. I’m always happy about all the coverage I get from all the great poster blogs: you, OMG, Poster District, Posters and Prints, Drymounted, and of course Peter over at Slashfilm.com…I’m sure I’m leaving someone out there- my apologies! As far as artists go, Jacob Borshard is a friend I’ve known for quite a while now, and I pretty much had to drag him into screenprinting some of his cartoon work over a year ago now, but since then he’s turned into a real beast of an artist, and it’s been great seeing him build his fanbase through Nakatomi. His stuff sells to a wide group of people that don’t circulate in the poster scene, which is just so healthy for everyone concerned. He’s been fantastic to work with. We just started publishing his cartoon strip, Creebobby, in the Nakatomi blog.
Thanks for all the great work in 2010 we hope to see more very soon..
Wait- don’t play me off! I’m not done with my acceptance speech!
